In honor of Women’s History Month

On March 3rd, 1913, thousands of women wearing white gathered in Washington, D.C. to call for a constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. While women had been fighting hard for suffrage for over 60 years, this marked the first major national event for the movement. Some marchers were jostled, tripped, and violently attacked, while police on the parade route did little to help. By the end of the day, over 100 women had to be hospitalized for injuries. However, the women did not give up; they finished the parade with pride. Just a few years later, in 1920, the 19th Amendment was finally ratified, ensuring that “[T]he right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on the account of sex.” Judy Chicago commemorates Women’s History Month and the Women’s Suffrage Movement by creating an unscented, white soap bar that pays homage to the white dresses women wore during the Women’s March of 1913
